Where are people getting that HPV is not an STD? The virus that causes genital warts and the strain of HPV that causes cervical cancer IS an STD. It is transmitted sexually. It's not stigmatized like, Herpes, even though it can be potentially fatal, whereas Herpes is not, but it is most definitely an STD.
References :
There are over a hundred types of HPV. About 30 are considered STDs because they affect the genital area. At least 8/10 women will contract an STD form of HPV.

Of those types of HPV that cause STDs, some can cause genital warts (low risk) and some cause cancer (high risk). Both types can cause cervical abnormalities. If your pap is abnormal, a lot of doctors will automatically run an HPV test. The test that's usually used test for high risk strains only. So if it's negative, that doesn't mean you don't have HPV. It means you have a low risk strain as opposed to a high risk one. This is useful in predicting who's cervical abnormalities will clear up, and who's might progress.

Most people with HPV have no symptoms.

You should ask your doctor what STDs you should be checked for. I would think you would want routine screening for gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, hepatitis B (if you haven't had the vaccine), and hepatitis C.
